In ambiguity application,it is discovered that the English tragedies’ cognitive modes have experienced such an evolution that in Shakespeare’s tragedies,the addressor and his addressee are separated and ambiguity application is wholly practiced with definite right standard context,though too late in disambiguation,in Shaw’s,the addressor and his addressee are adhesive and the application wholly but with wrong standard context in disambiguation,and in O’Neill’s,the addressor and his addressee are identical and disambiguation could not be done without standard context.Their different modes have revealed the cognitive causal process of the tragedies and the evolution the modes bring about indicates the tragedy is deepening in the English tragedies,from which the cognitive connotation of the evolution is further illuminated.
