清代女弹词中的“女扮男装”现象非常普遍,一般在作品中采用“女扮男装”故事模式有两点原因,一是展示才华,二是逃避婚姻。在“才女风尚”中获得更多文学培养的弹词女作家们无法逾越性别的限制,因此就借助故事中“女扮男装”的女主角去考取功名,完成一次才名的社会公认,从而去弥补内心因性别限制带来的不平衡感。另外,她们在设计“女扮男装”的故事时,潜在心理上是为了逃避婚姻所带来的不确定性,其实质不过是“明知不可为而为之”的一次心灵叛逆。但是,弹词女作家们的这种易装思路其实是幼稚而天真的,她们在反叛的过程中不自觉地在向“贤妻良母”的闺训靠拢,因此不可将这种叛逆意识过分夸大为女性意识的觉醒。
