The running-in frictional experiments were conducted under simulated engine conditionswith actual piston rings and iron cylinder liner combinations. Elemental analyses of the wear tracksindicate that antiwear agent ZDTP is quite different from the Mg- and Ca-containing detergents inthe selectivity towards the tribosurfaces of both rings and liners. It is suggested that the tribo-chemical activity of tribosurfaces plays the role in governing the characteristic population of func-tional additive elements.
