The radar detection process involves the comparison of the received signal amplitude with the threshold value. In order to obtain a constant false alarm rate, an adaptive threshold that reflects the local clutter environment must be applied. For example, the cell averaging method is an adaptive method. A constant false alarm rate method discussed in this paper uses a single value from the so-called ordered statistics as the constant false alarm rate threshold (this method is essentially different from the rank-sum statistics method). This method has several advantages over the unit-averaged CFAR method, especially where more than one target exists in the reference window from which local clutter conditions are estimated, or where the reference window spans the edge of the clutter.
