UK’s International Nuclear Project website reported on April 3, 2012 The British government has confirmed that it intends to significantly increase its third party liability limits for nuclear damages applicable to nuclear power operators in the event of a nuclear incident. This decision was made following a public consultation conducted in 2011 on the United Kingdom’s proposal to amend the third-party nuclear liability convention signed by the United Kingdom and most other EU countries, namely “Third Party Liability in the Field of Nuclear Energy Paris Convention ”and“ Brussels Convention to Supplement the Paris Convention ”. At present, the nuclear power operator’s liability for damage caused by each nuclear accident is only 140 million pounds. The United Kingdom intends to raise this limit to 1.2 billion euros to ensure that more claimants can receive compensation within a wider range of damages.
