中国的山水画发展到南宋,出现两位画家:马远和夏圭,画史以“马夏”合称他们。作为南宋宁宗、理宗朝院画家中的领军人物,马夏的山水画最能代表南宋山水画的新风格,用雄奇简练的笔法,水墨苍劲的大斧劈皴,取材精炼,强调画面的留白及空间感。以坚实、爽朗有力的浅染来描写江南雄伟壮丽的山川。在构图方面,善于将复杂的景色给以高度的集中和概括,在忠实地描绘自然景象的同时,利用空白来寻求诗情,画风影响深远,开启了南宋疏秀精简的画风。这里要介绍的南宋《风雨归舟图》,由马远同时代宫廷画家苏显祖创作的。
