The ECM B-1B bomber’s ECM renewal plan will be officially put into effect early next year. The estimated total cost is between $ 7.5 billion and $ 1 billion, making it the single largest single EW program currently being funded in the United States. The improvement program was designed to overcome the shortcomings of the Eaton-ALQ-161 defensive avionics system and to provide a common “Mod O” layout for all B-1 aircraft. Crucially, those avionics systems originally designed to carry out low-level nuclear bombing missions over the former Soviet Union will be improved so that the B-1 can deal with various regional air defense threats at high and low altitudes and at different speeds.
