XCOR Aerospace announced that it has successfully completed several hot test runs of the new liquid oxygen / kerosene rocket engine XR-4K5. This new engine has higher performance than the previous isopropyl alcohol rocket engine used for EZ rockets, producing 1800 lbs of thrust and 2.5 times more pressure in the combustion chamber than in previous engines. XCOR’s chief engineer, Dan Delong, said: “The XR-4K5 engine was the first XO / kerosene engine designed by XCOR Inc. The initial test was performed on a non-cooled thrust chamber structure and we wanted to further develop a regeneratively cooled thrust chamber solution. He added: ”The XR-4K5 engine also features a more recent electric ignition design, which is smaller and lighter than previous ignition systems.“ ”
