It allows us to interpret globalization in different ways and to guide us in raising specific issues of relevance to it. The author believes that social constructivism can inspire us in two ways to understand globalization. First, it allows us to critically view many of the discourses of globalization that are taken for granted. “Globalization” is by no means a simple concept. If we care about realistic social construction, we will find that globalization contains a unique discourse on international reality. Second, from a more substantive perspective, social constructivism’s understanding of globalization emphasizes the role of non-material forces, focusing on the process of constructing and interpreting meaning and treating them as integral parts of globalization. The social constructivist perspective also emphasizes the potential for change rather than the inevitability of a global process, helping to bring politics back into the discourse of globalization. The author firstly clarifies the concept of social constructivism, points out that this is a meta-theoretical method, and puts forward some preliminary ideas on the significance of globalization research. Second, it discusses two major contributions of social constructivism to understanding of globalization: the first one focuses on the globalization of culture and norms; the second one focuses on the construction of language and global discourse and the role of power. Finally, from the perspective of constructivism, we make a brief explanation of the rising powers.
