完整的历史书写,应是包括妇女在内的书写。将妇女纳入历史的书写之中,很早就成为了中国史学的传统,其中,西汉末期刘向编纂的《列女传》,不仅是中国妇女专史书写的嚆矢,也是世界史学史上首部专门的妇女历史书写的专史,对中国史学史注重妇女史的书写,具有积极的影响。从中国古代历史书写的历史看,妇女在历史书写中呈现的形象,受时代思潮及妇女地位的变化而变化。汉至唐初期间,历史书写中的妇女形象相对丰满而多样,五代以后一直至清末,历史书写中的妇女形象较之前一阶段发生较大的变化,尤其是在理学高度发达的宋代以后,受道德价值优先思想的影响,妇女的道德纯粹性被社会极端地强调,以往的“列女”逐渐为“烈女”的形象所取代,并影响到少数民族政权的历史书写。随着晚明以降社会变化的影响,知识界开始出现新的评价妇女的价值观,极端强调道德价值优先的“烈女”形象受到一些非主流知识分子的批判,一些新的妇女形象亦在这些非主流知识分子的历史书写中有所展现。
