Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Wave Propagation Laboratory are currently conducting a feasibility study on a global satellite windsat. The instrument is intended for use at the space station, which uses Doppler radar technology to measure wind speed. The instrument points the laser beam to the Earth and detects the backscattered light from the wind that sends the dust particles. Wind direction and speed are calculated based on the frequency of the reflected radiation. By observing the different directions one after the other, two components of wind speed in the horizontal direction can be obtained.
