区别于传统的应用光学,变折射率光学是围绕着变折射材料的发现、研究,变折射率光学元件的设计、制作和应用而开展起来的。所谓变折射率材料,就是指折射率连续变化的光学介质。其折射率通常可以用下式表示 n=N_0(x)+N_1(x)ξ+N_2(x)ξ~2+……其中,x是沿光轴的坐标,ξ是任一点到光轴径向距离的平方。N_0(x)为轴上折射率分布,N_n(x)叫作第n次轴外折射率分布。
