To assess the risk of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis C virus during pregnancy and childbirth, Weintrub PS et al. In the United States examined sera from 43 infants and examined serum levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and recombinant immunoblotting RIBA) to detect its anti-HCV antibody. The mothers of these infants are intravenous drug addicts. Of the 43 infants in the first 4 months of life, 17 (40%) detected anti-HCV that was passively transmitted by their mothers. Ten of these infants (seropositive) were followed up for about 15 months. 9
