This article discusses the various trade-offs in hardware design to meet the diverse needs of various CRT display systems. To show different data formats for radar, television, infrared, attitude, fire control, flight control, and other aircraft systems, multi-mode display systems use both stroke and raster technology. These display requirements are translated into CRT, phosphor filter, high voltage, video, deflection and symbol generator requirements. When making compromises, the considerations are power and heat. The resulting digital symbols are based on the capabilities, speed and storage capacity of the hard device.
