The Republic of Niger can be divided into two sedimentary and tectonic areas, namely the Paleozoic platform in the north and the west and the Mesozoic graben in the east. Thick Paleozoic strata exist in the northwest (Tamesna-Talak region of the Iullemeden basin) and northeast (Djado basin). The prospects for oil and gas in these two regions have not yet been confirmed. Based on the analogy with the Illizi Basin in Algeria and the Murzuk Basin in Libya, it is speculated that there may be Silurian source rocks and Ordovician, Devonian and Carboniferous sandstone reservoirs.
