There used to be a chief and a lot of ambitions. His kingdom, on the shores of the Persian Gulf, is a lazy village blazed by the sun with a narrow bay that winds its way. There were dozens of pearl-dwellers, fishermen, and businessmen who lived there and dredged the dhows and fishing boats that docked along the bay. This chief, Rashid Bin Said Syed Maktoum, is an ordinary ditch in the eyes of other people. In his view, it is an avenue that leads to the world. One day in 1959, he borrowed a lot of money from Kuwait, a neighbor with a lot of oil, to dig the cove deep and wide enough to do so. He also built wharves and warehouses, and planned blueprints for roads, schools and homes. Some people think he is crazy, some people think he just looked away, but Chief Rashid firmly believe that the power of innovation. Occasionally at dawn, he brought young son Muhammad around and walked to the empty pier, using words and gestures to portray his dreams in the air. Finally, his dream came true: the new Dubai pulled up from the ground, crowds came.
