在小模数齿轮加工中,基本的切齿方去是仿形铣齿法和展成滚齿法。由于展成滚齿法有许多优点,得到广泛地应用。但展成滚齿法对某些非渐开线齿形不能加工。为了适应大量生产,钟表小齿轮采用半自动和自动分度铣齿机加工。和滚齿相比,存在着分齿不均匀和生产效率低的缺点。把仿形铣齿法和展成滚齿法结合起来,吸取各自的优点,发展成为一种新的小齿轮加工方法——成形滚切法,用来滚切非渐开线齿形。
