In 1999, the global polyurethane market grew by 5 percentage points to 7.2 billion pounds. The annual growth rate of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)-based materials is 11%, and the annual growth rate of toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-based materials is 6% to 7%. MDI has a faster growth trend due to the rapid increase in demand for its final markets such as thermal insulation products, electrical and electronic applications and building materials. In 1999, the demand for polyurethanes in New Zealand, Australia and other countries increased by 5.3% to 4.5 billion pounds. Among them, MDI is 8%, TDI is 4%, and polyol is 1.2%.
