Figure out the network analyzer capabilities and procedures to help operators get the best test performance from the instrument. In the first part of this article, we discuss the role of directional couplers and directional bridges, and their contribution to signal separation. The second part will cover the rest of the network analyzer. Network analyzers, whether scalar or vector, rely on diode (wideband) or tuned receiver (narrowband) technologies. Narrowband detection is suitable for evaluating high suppression devices such as filters, which must be used to measure the phase. Broadband detection is best suited for frequency conversion components such as tuners, especially local oscillator (LO) tests.
