社会主义的本质是社会主义制度区别于其他社会制度的特殊矛盾（特殊本质）。社会形态是经济基础与上层建筑的统一。生产力不能成为社会主义制度内部矛盾的矛盾方面，因而不能成为社会主义本质方面。但发展生产力构成作为先进社会制度的社会主义制度的一般本质方面。马克思主义关于社会主义本质的经典表述是以经济基础和上层建筑的的本质特征为核心内容的。说邓小平同志的表述以生产力为核心，把邓小平同志的表述与马列的表述对立起来，甚至否定马列的表述，说马列有关社会主义本质的表述有片面、空想成分。已经过时云云，都是不妥的。邓小平同志关于社会主义本质的表述有当前实践的针对性，并非对社会主义本质的一切方面的全面表述。只有将它与马列的表述统一起来理解才是正确的。排除马列对社会主义经济基础和上层建筑本质规定的表述，孤立地理解邓小平同志的表述，有可能被曲解或片面理解。对于我国当前社会主义改革和建设实践中发生的背离社会主义本质的现象，应当对照马列和邓小平同志有关社会主义本质的论述加以纠正。
The essence of socialism is the special contradiction (special essence) of the socialist system from other social systems. Social formation is the unification of economic base and superstructure. Productivity can not become a contradictory aspect of the internal contradictions in the socialist system and therefore can not become an essential aspect of socialism. However, the development of productive forces constitutes the general essence of the socialist system as an advanced social system. The classic Marxist formulation of the nature of socialism is based on the economic foundation and the essential features of the superstructure. Said that Comrade Deng Xiaoping expressed his statement with productivity as the core, opposed Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s formulation to Marxism-Leninism and even denied Marx’s Lenin’s remark that Marx and Lenin’s statements on the nature of socialism had a one-sided and utopian element. Outdated, are not appropriate. Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s formulation of the essence of socialism has the pertinence of current practice and is not a comprehensive statement of all aspects of the essence of socialism. It is correct to understand it only by unifying Marxist-Leninist statements. Excuse Marxism-Leninism’s formulation of the socialist economic foundation and the essential provisions of the superstructure, and having an isolated understanding of Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s statements may be misinterpreted or one-sidedly understood. For the phenomenon of deviating from the essence of socialism that occurs in our country’s current socialist reform and construction practice, we should correct the argument made by Comrade Deng Xiaoping and Marx and Lenin about the nature of socialism.
