废名小说一直缺乏相对纯粹的田园诗意。由于无法调和艺术世界的诸多矛盾与冲突,最终陷入进退失据的意义纠结和表达困境,成为一种厌世意义下的田园失落过程。厌世出于一种由“哀愁”激起的弥散性情感向更为消沉的虚无主义情怀的演进,而诗意则源于文学梦境失落过程中审美自足性的持留、沦落与幻灭的挽歌倾向。如此的田园世界,很难在传统和现代中进行明确归属,迷误间呈现的艺术得失,实为废名小说所独具。
