In the Purex work-up procedure, the extraction of RuNO nitrate complexes is complex and the tributyltetrazolium complex (D_3) and tetra-nitrate complex (D_4) can be easily extracted. They may also be combined with TBP Resulting in a more easily extracted X_3 complex - RuNO (NO_3) _3 · TBP · H_2O. Under low acid conditions, the nitrate in X_3 complex may be displaced by water molecules to generate X_1 and X_2 with low extraction partition coefficient, while in high acid condition, X_1 and X_2 will be converted to X_3 which can be easily extracted.
