寇准,北宋名臣,不惑之年即擢升参政事(相当于宰相),居百官之首。张咏,蜀地太守,吏治清明,才学过人,深谙寇准。早在寇准升任参政事之初就对僚属说:“寇公奇才,惜学术不足耳”。一次,寇准在外出公干时遇到张咏,向其求教,张咏委婉地建议寇准读《霍光列传》。寇准不解张咏话意,回去后急忙取来《汉书》翻至《霍光列传》,一字不漏地读下去。当读到“不学无术”这句话时,猛然省悟:“张公言我,正是此句。多年来忙于事务,懒得读书,确是学术不足了,务须改过才是。”
