薄英上大学时原本想学考古,却阴差阳错地学上了中文,加上他家庭艺术氛围的熏陶,使得他与中国艺术越走越近。他与中国著名艺术家张充和、白谦慎、华人德等人的交往,也使得他对中国传统文化,尤其是书法艺术的理解更加深入。薄英由此产生了对金石考据之学的兴趣,他为了了解书法与石头之间的渊源,来到了中国,用一年的时间进行访碑活动。他认为与特定地点紧密联系的石刻书法,是不仅仅通过书法文本来传达的,能够亲手触摸刻字的岩石则会有意想不到的感受。他还看到在泰山经石峪上散步的山羊,
