This article was originally published in the Swiss Journal of Theoretical and Applied Geophysics (PagesOPH) No. 4, 1978 issue - “Rock Friction and Earthquake Prediction” album. Author Bayer Lee (J.D.BYERLEE) is one of the chief editor of the album. This article reviews and summarizes the experimental research on rock mechanics conducted by the United States for the purpose of predicting earthquakes in the past 10 years and made some comments. In our opinion, this article reflects the actual level of the U.S. research work in this area more fully and has certain reference value for studying the mechanism of earthquake precursors. Therefore, the full text is translated here. When introducing the results of various experimental studies, the original articles cited 91 relevant documents and 9 accompanying drawings. Due to limited space, they were omitted in the translations. Only the few leading researchers cited in the original texts were retained Name of the person, so that readers reference to further search the literature.
