什刹海旧称积水潭,原是一南北狭长之天然湖泊。在北京旧城营建中,湖泊南部入皇城以内,遂因古制改名太液池。太液池上先有琼华岛,后经开浚又建瀛台,始有北海、中海、南海之称,是为皇家御苑,庶民百姓不得涉足。积水潭隔在皇城之外,元代曾是漕运终点,一时舳舻蔽水,盛况空前。其后运道中阻,而人民群众喜其水上
