(2016 edition) Chronic hepatitis B is a chronic inflammatory disease of the liver caused by a persistent infection with Hepatitis B virus (HBV). About 2 billion people worldwide have been infected with HBV, of which 240 million are chronically infected with HBV. About 650,000 people die of liver failure, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma each year due to HBV infection, which seriously endangers human health. Evidence-based medical research shows that vaccination with early-stage hepatitis B vaccine can significantly reduce HBV infection and effective antiviral therapy can have a crucial role in the long-term prognosis of patients with chronic hepatitis B.
