The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is the latest and largest single-unit water transfer project in the United States authorized by the Reclamation Bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior (BOR). The project draws water from the Colorado River from Lake Havasu, located on the eastern border of Arizona, to three counties, Maricop, Pinal and Pima, in the Sonoran Desert in south-central Arizona. The project started its project planning and design in 1968 and formally started construction in 1973 with a total design investment of 3.7 billion U.S. dollars.
