As with many other methods and approaches, Grammar Translation tended to be referred to in the past tense as if it no longer existed and had died out to be replaced world-wide by the fun and motivation of the communicative classroom. If we examine the principal features of Grammar Translation, however, we will see that not only has it not disappeared but that many of its characteristics have been central to language teaching throughout the ages and are still valid today. Therefore, in order to explore a new statue for Grammar Translation method in China’s English teaching context. In this passage, two parts of Grammar Translation method will be discussed. Firstly, its strengths; secondly, its innovation usage in today’s English teaching.
The strengths of grammar translation method.Firstly, students can have a relatively deep comprehension of abstract word meaning and complex structure of sentences through the translation and contrast between native language and second language.Secondly, it is beneficial for students to broaden their thinking, train their wisdom and improve the effect of teaching by the systematic study of grammar knowledge and the understanding of students.Thirdly, the structure of foreign language knowledge can be mastered easily by students and internalize the structure of foreign language knowledge. Fourthly, learning to acquire the rules of grammar can help students cultivate the ability of understanding and applying English. Fifthly, this method is convenient and available for teachers to conduct with a few teaching instruments and facilities.
The innovation usage of grammar translation method in today’s English teaching field. Recent years, in China’s English teaching, the calling for adopting communicative teaching method is higher and higher. However, practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. Gradually, in the process of researching the application of communicative teaching method in China, more and more experts found that due to some limitations exist such as large class size, limited class time, students’ age and so on so forth. Therefore, communicative teaching method meets a lot of restrictions and traditional grammar translation method still widely used in foreign language teaching which is always an effective method in helping students learning English and improving comprehensive ability in English using. As for grammar translation method, only on the basis of full playing its advantages and unceasingly correction on its deficiencies can this method play its role and improve the quality of English teaching and learning. Firstly, in view of the grammar translation method relying too heavily on translation, and thus relying too heavily on native language, teachers should abandon the mechanical comparison between mother tongue and target language and word-for-word translation consciously, make a new and more fair evaluation to the role of mother tongue in English teaching. Secondly, in view of the grammar translation method ignore the pronunciation and intonation practice, thus difficult to cultivate students’ oral English. The teacher should guide students to combine the three elements of language (vocabulary, phonetics and grammar) organically, after all, verbal communication is a very important aspect of interpersonal communication. Thirdly, in view of grammar translation method emphasis more on the deliver of grammar knowledge than the cultivate of grammar competence. English teachers should put away the old thinking such as students learn grammar in order to learn grammar. New conceptions such as set the idea that grammar learning is for reading service. Grammar teaching is the teaching method instead of teaching purpose. Illustration of grammar should based on certain text, and every single text reveals several grammar items. Fourthly, as for some teaching materials such as difficult sentences and paragraphs from literature works which are far away from students actual situation. For English beginner, teaching materials which beyond their level are apparently inappropriate because they have no systematic understanding of grammar and lack of basic vocabulary. While for college students, the situation is different.
Everything is in constantly improvement and development, so as to grammar translation method. The fact that grammar translation method have occupied the main stage of foreign language teaching indicate its tenacious vitality and rationality of existence. What’s more, the foundation of its tenacious vitality and rationality of existence is based on the learning from others’ teaching methods’ strong points to offset grammar translation method’s weakness. I have confidence that as time goes by, grammar translation method will be more perfect in foreign language teaching in China.
