For the new women who were active between the 1880s and the 1930s, one of their major appeals was concentrated on the critique of the institution of marriage. Through the diachronic analysis of Edith Wharton’s novels in different periods, this article tries to reveal her ambivalent attitude to the experiment of modern women’s marriage. In Wharton novels, marriage has become a narrative strategy in the plot, reflecting and reflecting on the three new claims of the new female in terms of gender reconstruction and the relationship between the two sexes, namely, “Romance of Rome”, “Free Love” And “companion marriage ”. This article argues that through the revelation of the intrinsic defects of the new generation of women’s marital test patterns in the past two generations, Wharton not only affirmed the necessity of the marriage system but also explained the dilemma confronting the marriage system.
