The Sound and the Fury is the novel which Faulkner spent the most effort and is the writer’s favourite book.The title of this book is taken from Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth,implying the multiple themes of the novel.One theme is to discuss the corruption and collapse of the old southern traditional values through the description of the Compson family’s corruption and the decline of southern plantation economy.In the novel,Faulkner seeks the way out for American south during the transformation period though the figures he created,but no one is successful in getting out of the bad influence of the Old South.
