Compared with the Shanghai's typical metropolitan atmosphere, the publishing industry in Shanghai has been much more low- profiled in recent years. Publishers in Shanghai, deeply influenced by this traditional and modem city, have developed their own unique styles in China's publishing industry with their practicalness.
"Pure book publishers" is how Wang Yan, Director of the East China Normal University Press, describes publishers in Shanghai. During my conversion with this Shanghai publisher, talented in literature, capable and well-experienced, she has mentioned several times the word belief. Since assuming the position in the East China Normal University Press, Wang Yan has always put focus on main business, helping the press achieve both social and economic benefits. More than one hundred books published by the press, including Researches on Chinese Educational History, Development of Ancient Chinese Characters and Children's Psychological Manual, have won various awards. Its receivable amount has increased by an average of 12% each year, and reached 810 million yuan in 2013. And she will continue to lead the East China Normal University Press to become collectivized, capitalized, digitalized, intemationalized and professional.
The most significant difference between Shanghai publishing industry and publishing industry in other places lies in that Shanghai publishing industry has always taken publication as main business. Compared with other publishing groups involving in diversified industries, including tourism and real estate, Shanghai publishers have unswervingly focused on book publishing. Some might say Shanghai publishers are conservative, while to Director Wang Yan, "belief' is a much more appropriate word to describe Shanghai.
It's not because the East China Normal University Press cannot see temptation as what people call outside. But as a press affiliated to East China Normal University, it's more important for it to insist on publishing and providing better service for school education and research. And from the view of the publishers, they have higher requirement on their own. Under the new situation, Wang Yan proposes a development strategy, taking education publishing as its center, continuing to focus on main business, and continuously improving its core competitiveness so as to build an everlasting press.
In fact, Shanghai publishers are conservative while speaking of their belief in book publishing, but they are not conservative in aspect of publishing mode, for example, they also publish books in modem mode to enrich the publishing contents and to make it be more reader-oriented. As a representative of the reform of university press, the East China Normal University Press has transformed itself as a market-oriented enterprise in 2009. As early as 2003, the East China Normal University Press set up a branch office in Beijing and later set up branch offices on basic education, advanced education, teaching aid materials, preschool and educational psychology. Besides, they have also carried out explorations on company operation, for example, investing joint ventures with a publishing press in Taiwan and seeking cooperation with private- owned publishing house.
Director Wang Yan believes that insisting on professional development in editing, marketing and management is one of the characteristics of the East China Normal University Press and Shanghai publishing industry. For the East China Normal University Press, every benefit comes from book publishing; therefore, under current competitive situation, it is the first priority for individual publishing presses to stick to their own characteristics and professional development.
On the Eighth Shanghai Printing Award Ceremony, held in July 2014, 11 books published by the East China Normal University Press were awarded. Collected Works of Xu Zhongyu won Gold Award for paper- cover publications; Origin won Silver Award for creative binding and layout design; ECNU Review 2 won Silver Award for digital printing; Chronicles of Chinese Academic Study, The Book of History, 50 Questions about Modern Chinese Education, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Research on Teaching Knowledge Development, Notes about Aesthetic in Paris, Picture Book of Museum (3 editions) and Beautiful Moment won the First Prize for printing. Those tangible and visible certificates for reputation prove their success on ideas of publishing development.
To diversify publishing channels, Wang Yan requires that digital publishing of the East China Normal University Press shall be more colorful. Currently, the focus shall be put on "Meihuishu full media digital platform" project. Main business shall be preschool education course. In addition, more attention shall be paid to diversified and systematical contents and resource, independent and personalized teaching management plan, including course arrangement, course implementation and combined function of home and school to meet the requirements of kindergarten on customized course plan, full media teaching, expert guiding and interactive activities between home and kindergarten. She set an example that to correct current "primary-style teaching" of kindergarten, press based on the most advanced educational ideas customizes a set of studying program containing 96 fine picture books and 800 studying activities. Its contents cover health, language, society, science and other kinds of kindergarten teaching resource- Meihuishu and will bring huge change to original force-feed teaching mode of preschool education in China. This series of products will be applied predicted in September. In 2013, the digital publishing project of this course resource-"Meihuishu full media digital platform" project gained a financial aid of 10 million yuan for cultural development funded by Ministry of Finance; besides, "the East China Normal University Press has also carried out electric schoolbag project with cooperation with some middle schools, and this project will expand gradually this year." The East China Normal University Press was established in June 1957 and was one of the two oldest university press founded after the establishment of New China. Based on the thick academic atmosphere of East China Normal University, it has become a comprehensive publishing house with comprehensive education publishing as its main business.
