This paper presents a proposal for the standardization of a small turbine with a power output of 100 to 2000 kW and a head of 2 to 800 meters, detailing the scenario of a low head station. Over the past two decades, the development and utilization of many small rivers have been overlooked because of the relatively low electricity prices and the high cost of manufacturing machinery, and small hydropower stations are considered uneconomical. Due to the civil works for each small power station, the turbine and the electrical equipment have to be re-calculated and designed; this has led to longer lead times and adversely affected the cash flow. In order to promote the use of under-exploited hydraulic resources, a project was carried out at Bell Machinery Factory in Rosorne, Switzerland, to enable the economic development of small-scale hydropower plants and the early modernization of hydropower stations that were built in the early stages.
