Objective To investigate the effect of neonatal sleep on postpartum depression in mothers and to provide a scientific basis for promoting maternal and infant health. Methods From January 2013 to February 2014, a total of 1 138 mothers from the health check-up clinics in the hospital were selected as the study subjects. The depression of the newborn mothers was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the neonatal sleep was assessed using the Concise Baby Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ). Results The incidence of postpartum depression was 42.5%, including mild depression and clinical depression. The average neonatal sleep time during the day was (6.97 ± 2.12) h, the average night sleep time was (8.48 ± 1.70) h, the average night awakening time was (0.84 ± 0.61) h, the average number of awakenings was (2.73 ± 1.10) times. The score of EPDS on postnatal day 42 was negatively correlated with the nighttime sleep time of newborns, and positively correlated with the time and number of night awakenings. Neonatal mothers with sleep problems had higher EPDS scores than mothers with no sleep problems (OR = 1.078, 95% CI: 1.069-2.728). There was significant difference between the two groups (P <0.05). Conclusions Postnatal depression is associated with neonatal sleep. Good neonatal sleep habits should be cultivated as soon as possible to prevent postpartum depression and promote maternal and infant health.
