我之认识从维熙,不是读他的名噪新时期文坛并因而获得“大墙文学之父”美誉的中篇小说《大墙下的红玉兰》,而是读他复出文坛后的第一部长篇小说《北国草》。此作出版于1983年,当时我正在中国作协创作研究室分工阅读和评论长篇小说,因此作为工作需要首先读了它,并应《中国青年报》之约写了评论。《北国草》写的是五十年代一批北京知青到北大荒创业的故事,与维熙写大墙生活的系列小说不仅题材不同,风格也迥异,似更多地保留他于五十年代刚走上文坛时作为“荷花淀派”青年作家的艺术风格。记
