本方出自《霍乱论》,由滑石、香豉、山槴、黄芩、省头草、川朴、半夏、白蔻组成,为治热霍乱之剂。“燃照”即点燃犀烛以照之。古人称犀牛为“灵兽”。谓燃其角可以烛幽,如沈金鳌《杂病源流犀烛》云:“极天下能烛幽者,犀之角而已,角何能烛?以犀性之通灵也。犀之神力,全注于角,其通灵之性,亦全聚于角,是以燃之而幽无弗烛也。”王孟英以此比喻其方清热化湿,辟秽泄烛之功甚著,他在《王氏医案》中云:“暑湿内蕴,未化也,须具燃犀之照,庶不为病所蒙,因制燃照汤予之。”
