Narrative ethics focuses on the relationship between narrative and morality and is a hot frontier of narratology. However, previous studies have not touched on the ethical mechanism of speech in novels. Taking Australian writer Peter Carey ’s classic “Jack Meigs” as an example, the article attempts to interpret the writer’ s ethical orientation and value judgments in the novel from the perspective of social semiotics by using systematic functional linguistic theory. The research shows that the way of ethical manifestation is diversified, including the way of realization, the polarity of attitude and the difference of narrative perspective.
