1956年7月改版前的《人民日报》是一张对开四版的大报。当时正在提倡学习《真理报》,确切地说是在模仿《真理报》。从而远离了我国办报的传统作法,不讲究报纸版面的编排艺术,形成了千篇一律的报道模式,长新闻大文章挤得水泄不透,简单干枯的一句话标题散落其间,正如有人所说:“看去像是茫茫大地上立着几根木头柱子。”给人一种僵硬、死气沉沉的感觉。这样的版面,不但读者不欢迎,报社编辑人员自己也不满意。胡乔木在当时的颐园报纸评读会上,更是提过不少批评和建议。给人留下印象最深的是胡乔木对《人民日报》版面的批评。他多次指出,《人民日报》的版面编排“非常落后”。他说:“版面编排沉闷,文体品种单调,
