有些研究者全盘否定应用诱变剂人工获得雄性不育的可能性,认为植物雄性不育只能在种间及属间杂交时胞核和胞质不相适应才能获得。近年来有些研究者报道,用人工诱导的方法获得了高粱、玉米、洋葱、胡萝卜、软粒小麦、糖用甜菜等作物的雄性不育系。能引起雄性不育的诱变剂:秋水仙碱、乙烯亚胺、N-亚硝基甲基尿素、链霉素、硫酸二乙脂、γ-射线和快中子,等人曾用链霉素处理玉米幼苗的方法诱导雄性不育,获得了高世代的玉米雄性不育,美国用链霉素诱导产生了玉米的CMS,并将这一专利给了苏联,但到目前还未利用。
