In the beginning of Imperial Government Railway(IGR) transportation in Japan,rolling stocks,rails and other parts were imported from U.k..In Nov.1872,an imported car wheel lathe was set up at Shinbashi railway factory.Dec.1872,Japanese apprentices made wooden passenger cars under the guidance of employed foreign railway engineers.It was necessary to shape a wheel tread of rolling stocks,so car wheel lathe was used for this factory,works.It seems that the technology and skill of car building and its maintenance methods have been succeeded in the factory of railway from the Meiji period.We found British-made two car wheel lathes early in the 1900’s at Nakaminato(Ibaraki) and Kaseda(Kagoshima).These two lathes are preserving in a museum.
