《上海春秋》为“通俗文学之王”包天笑的长篇代表作,在现今学术界却颇有争议。作者以新闻记者的眼光,运用摄像机般的全景式扫摄,在作品中客观、冷静地展现了十里洋场的颓靡与堕落,对社会存在的种种丑恶现象简单地加以故事化后连缀成篇,一定程度上使作品本身所含的谴责之意被艺术上的缺陷而削弱;另一方面却因具有原生质般的社会生活史实存真,为今天的读者提供了宝贵的都市风俗史料。
