Affected by the cold and snowy weather at the beginning of 2008, aquaculture in southern China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Norway suffered losses to varying degrees. At the same time, it is anticipated that the catch will be reduced by changes in the law of migratory fish migration in the waters of the South Pacific. According to this expectation, the import prices of Japanese shrimp, eel and other aquatic products have started to rise. Ninety percent of shrimp and eels consumed domestically in Japan are imported, and the aforementioned South Asian countries are their major importers. Recently, the import price of shrimp has risen 5% over December 2007, while the price of eel has risen 3%. The prices of other aquatic products have also slowly risen due to the comparative price effect.
