“当一天和尚撞一天钟”是人们对工作敷衍塞责者的讽喻。其实,这对僧人来讲,却是由来已久的不公正之词。虽说佛寺中撞钟者必是和尚,然而,并非凡和尚一定撞钟。前不久,笔者有幸参观了广东韶关的南华样寺,就有关“撞钟”之事,求教了那里的一位老法师。他说,撞钟者是专司其职的,没有一定资历的僧人不能担当此任。撞钟,必须守时,到点即撞、不早不迟。撞击的部位、力度并不一样,每次撞的节奏也不相同,正如军队的起床号、开饭号、冲锋号、熄灯号并不混淆一样。撞钟是件严肃的事,必须认真对待,每回撞多少下是不允许增减的。稍有疏忽,便会不符要求因此说“撞钟”是职能的要求, “When a monk hit a bell ” is an allegory of people who work predicament.
