The effects of high calcium (2.81% or 2.20%), medium calcium (0.5%), and low calcium (0.12%) on blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive rats (WKY) were observed. The results showed that the 24-hour urine total calcium and serum total calcium in rats with high calcium intake were significantly higher than those in rats with moderate calcium and low calcium intake; high calcium intake significantly reduced the blood pressure of SHR (P<0.01). Significantly slowing the increase in body weight of SHR, especially female SHR weight effect is more obvious; and low calcium intake significantly increased SHR blood pressure (P <0.001). The hypotensive effect of high calcium intake may be a non-physiological effect on the body.
