暖水壶在上世纪60年代已逐渐成为家家户户的必备用品。这时的暖水瓶外壳多是由铁皮做成的，内装瓶胆。瓶胆由双层玻璃制成，夹层中的两面镀上水银等金属，中间抽成真空，瓶口配软木塞子，可以在较长时间内保持瓶内的温度。铁壳外的花纹多为牡丹、龙凤呈祥等喜庆热闹的图案，因此成为当时新婚家庭的桌上必备装饰。在今天看来非常普通的设施，在那个还没有电热水壶的年代却是确保人们随时喝上热水的重要设施，很多人家更是靠着用暖水瓶去“老虎灶”提水来保障一家人的日常用热水。
