The content of the general practitioner training program involving the humanities and medicines is only one item of “medical ethics,” which is far from satisfying the general medical practitioners’ responsibility for health care duties, which is problem-oriented, human-centered, family-based, and community-wide. This article analyzes the necessity of the training of general practitioners and the assessment of additional skills in humanistic medicine from three aspects: the nature of duties of general practitioners, the medical ethical requirements of community health services, and the defects of humanities education in medical colleges and universities in China. In the three stages of theoretical learning, hospital rotation, and community practice, the specific contents, teaching methods, and assessment methods for the training of humanistic medical practitioners are carried out. The article suggests that training of general practitioners should incorporate the humanities medical practice skills into the outline, and make bold reforms in teaching and assessment methods so as to accelerate the penetration of humanistic spirit in community medical practice.
