粒组分析是研究沉积物结构和构造的重要手段,它是借助于概率论和数理统计方法来实现的。粒组分析的基本项目有粒度分析,粒态分析、粒向分析和粒性分析。在展布于自然界的沉积物中,选取若干剖面,测量和统计一定数量沉积物颗粒的上述参数,加以整理,找出它们的概率模型,用以判别沉积物的组织结构,推断其在搬运沉积时的介质特性,这是沉积物组构分析的主要步骤。正因为沉积物组构分析是概率论和统计数学在研究沉积物过程中的具体应用,因此,沉积物粒组分析的基本内容应包括:(1)利用沉积物的粒度、粒态和粒向的特征数,来表达它的性质;(2)利用其概率分布的差别,比较两种或数种沉积物的差异;(3)分析造成这种差异的因素;(4)阐明沉积物中两种特征数的相互关系;(5)研究沉积物粒组分析的取样、统计和试验的方法。
