Richard Hogarth is one of the founders of British cultural studies. His ideas have been widely cited by international scholars in the history of early development in this field. His book The Uses of Literacy, along with Raymond Williams’s Culture and Society, The Long Revolution, and EP Thompson’s Formation of the British Working Class, The hallmark of what the United Kingdom called traditional cultural studies shaped by Attle Hall. 196 4 In the founding of the Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham, Hogarth is the first institution to form an institution in this field. The center later became a base for the growth of cultural studies, with powerful capabilities and influence that were unmatched elsewhere. The first issue of “International Cultural Studies” (ICS) coincides with the 40th anniversary of the publication of “The Use of Cultural Knowledge”. At the same time, international scholars reflect on cultural studies and think that cultural studies have reached a turning point. In the past decade, the “explosion” in the field has not only greatly expanded the scope of the work carried out on its behalf, but also opened up new readership and new venues. However, its definition and completeness also caused confusion. What are the political motivations? Who is the target of the talk? Where does it go from here? Where is the problem? Difficult to properly simplify, let alone plainly answer, these questions. It is in this context that ICS conducted an interview with Richard Hogarth in September 1997 with a view to obtaining a continuum between the current cultural studies in the United Kingdom and the cultural studies in the late 1950s Understanding of sex and difference. Since he was 50 years
