The authors investigated the ability of hydrogen peroxide to inactivate several viruses by gaseous plasma inactivation. Six viruses used in the experiment include HIV virus type I, Hepatitis A virus, respiratory syncytial virus, vaccinia virus, herpes simplex virus type I, and poliovirus type II. The experimental virus was suspended in the cell culture medium and then dried on the bottom of a sterile glass Petri dish. The virus-inoculated dishes were placed in a hydrogen peroxide plasma system for inactivation for half the normal period. Four Petri dishes were inoculated with each virus and experiments were performed in two separate half-cycles to analyze the infectivity of the experimental virus and the cytotoxicity of the indicated cell lines. Under these experimental conditions, inactivation of six experimental viruses by gaseous hydrogen peroxide inactivation resulted in a drop in viral titer of 10 2.5 to 10 5.5, equivalent to 99.
