On March 24, when it was announced that the Central Organization Department decided to hire 100,000 college graduates to serve in the village in five years starting from 2008, many media outlets used the term “village official.” However, I searched through the original version of the Xinhua News Agency, which has a “village official” words are not. It seems that this is the media to play, create. First, the term “village official” is a freak born of the “official standard.” Secondly, the term “village official” is not recognized in rural areas and peasants are very offensive. I learned from my research that not only did the cadres and masses in the village not use the term to refer to college graduates, even the college graduates who were serving as assistant did not themselves take “village officials” as their own. “What official ah!” Is a common understanding.
